I’ve watched the GTA 6 launch trailer about eleven times since Rockstar dropped it yesterday. Not proud of it. Around watch number six I stopped following the story and started staring at the water, the hair, the neon smeared across wet asphalt.
I haven’t played it, obviously. This is a gamer’s read of the trailers, the 26-minute Extended Look, the official screenshots, and what Rockstar and the tech experts have said. Reports get flagged as reports.
Quick housekeeping: if you just want the date, price and preload details, I covered all that in my GTA 6 release date breakdown. Short version, it’s November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This one is about how the game looks and plays.
Does GTA 6 have ray tracing?
Yes, and it’s not a token effort. Digital Foundry went through the Extended Look and called it perhaps the most impressive real-time rendering they’ve ever seen. Ray tracing drives the reflections and the global illumination, the bounced light that makes a room look lit instead of painted.
The thing that got me was hair. Lucia’s curls move, lag behind and snap back like real hair. DF called hair and skin a generational jump, and I believe them.
Is GTA 6 30fps or 60fps on PS5?
30fps. Go ahead and groan, I did too.
The Extended Look was mastered as a 30fps video, and DF says the game targets 30fps on all platforms. Brazilian site Flow Games reported that Rockstar’s Rob Nelson confirmed the console versions run at 30, and reports from people who spoke to Rockstar say higher frame-rate modes will be considered after launch. 30 on day one, maybe more later.
The good news: DF scanned all 48,242 frames and found a tighter 30fps lock than any previous GTA launch. On a base PS5, DF puts the internal resolution at around 1440p, upscaled to 4K, which is why the image can look a little soft.
My take? I’d rather have a locked 30 with this much happening on screen than a “60” that falls apart every time a cop car blows up.
Will GTA 6 run at 60fps on PS5 Pro?
I wouldn’t count on it. DF’s argument is about the CPU. The Pro’s big upgrade is its GPU and PSSR upscaling, while its CPU was only about 7% faster in their CPU-limited tests. GTA 6 leans hard on the CPU for traffic, crowds, physics and streaming the world. DF called a 60fps console version “extremely unlikely” and said a 40fps mode is more achievable, though that’s their analysis, not a Rockstar promise.
The Pro should get a cleaner image and better ray tracing, but we haven’t seen Pro footage yet.
That highway shot Rockstar posted on October 8 sums it up. Count the cars, then check how far the skyline goes. That’s the CPU bill DF keeps talking about.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Big. Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is the studio’s largest map “by some degree,” roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s. Polygon reports Rockstar puts it at about three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. There’s no official square-mile number yet.
Leonida is Rockstar’s take on Florida, with Vice City as the Miami stand-in. Outside the city you get the Keys, swampy Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn and more. Game Informer’s coverage also confirms more than 170 animal species, plus tropical storms and hurricanes.
Who are Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple. Rockstar’s setup is simple: an easy score goes wrong, and the two of them land in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida, forced to rely on each other to get out alive.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported this week that building a whole game around two people who do everything together took years of AI work (the old-school NPC behavior kind, not chatbots). “This is a game about a couple. They have to be a couple,” Rob Nelson told him. Schreier also says the tone leans closer to Red Dead 2’s realism than GTA 5’s chaos. I loved Arthur Morgan, but I’m not sure I want GTA to make me that sad.
What can you do in GTA 6?
Here’s what’s been shown or confirmed so far:
- Two leads, with the story built around them working together.
- Robberies and heists, including a pretty high-tech job in the launch trailer.
- Lots of water: boats, scuba diving and swimming with dolphins all showed up in the Extended Look, per Polygon.
- Radio on foot: for the first time you can play stations and podcasts through in-game headphones or earbuds, not just in a car. Rockstar confirmed that on October 8.
- Packed crowds: DF noticed big crowds in clubs and on beaches, with hints of smarter NPCs.
One small worry: DF flagged the camera and animation judder that’s haunted Rockstar’s Rage engine for years, and they don’t expect it fixed by launch.
Is GTA 6 Online available at launch?
No. Take-Two calls GTA 6 “a single-player title” and says it will keep supporting the current GTA Online “after GTA 6 release and beyond.” Bloomberg reports the new online mode is expected in 2027, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed that.
How many GB is GTA 6?
Nobody knows yet. Rockstar hasn’t published a download or install size. That “676 GB” image floating around is fake; it literally says Xbox One, and the game isn’t on Xbox One. The most repeated rumor is just under 200GB. I’d clear about 200GB before preloading opens on November 12. The physical edition is just a download code in a box, so no disc shortcut.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC?
Not officially. GamesBeat reported, citing sources, that a PC version could land in early 2027, but Rockstar hasn’t announced anything. DF thinks even PC will struggle to hit 60fps without a high-end CPU.
GTA 6 price: how much are you paying?
Standard is $79.99. Ultimate runs $99.99. Pre-order either one and Rockstar throws in the Vintage Vice City Pack, which is basically a nostalgia bribe, and yes, it’s working on me.
So, is GTA 6 worth all the hype?
Looks-wise? Not hype at all. I can’t name an open world that looks better, and I’ve played most of them. What I’m unsure about is the feel. That 30fps cap, the heavy Rockstar movement, and a serious story that might frown at me for causing dumb chaos on a Friday night. I’ll find out November 19 like everyone else, probably with cold pizza nearby.

Yep. DF spotted ray-traced reflections and global illumination, and that’s on a plain old base PS5.

It should look sharper, with better ray tracing, but Rockstar hasn’t shown Pro footage or confirmed a higher frame rate.

Rockstar says Leonida is its biggest map yet, about twice the size of GTA 5’s and around three times Red Dead 2’s playable area.
