Every Diwali my phone does the same thing. By 9 AM there are forty “Happy Diwali” forwards, half of them the same golden diya GIF, and at least one uncle has sent a video with music that starts on its own. I love the people who send them. I just don’t remember a single message.
So this year I wrote my own. There are short ones for a WhatsApp status, warmer ones for parents and grandparents, a few for the office group where you can’t be too silly, and some for friends where you absolutely should be. There are also four image cards you can save and share. Tweak a word or two so they sound like you, otherwise what’s the point, na?
So when’s Diwali this year?
It’s a Sunday this time, November 8, 2026, so no begging the boss for leave. Lakshmi Puja is that evening. If you’re in Delhi, the puja muhurat is 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM. Amavasya kicks in at 11:27 AM on the 8th and runs till 12:31 PM on the 9th, as per Drik Panchang.
The other days this year:
Dhanteras comes first on Friday, November 6 (gold shops, brace yourselves). Choti Diwali lands on the 7th or 8th depending on whose calendar your family follows. Then the big night on Sunday the 8th, Govardhan Puja on Tuesday the 10th, and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, November 11.
Notice that Govardhan Puja isn’t the day right after Diwali this time. A lunar day gets skipped in 2026, so there’s a one-day gap. Plenty of people will get this wrong in the family group, so now you know.
Four Diwali cards for your WhatsApp
On your phone, long-press a card and hit save. On a laptop it’s right-click. Then just share it from your gallery like any photo.

Short Diwali wishes for WhatsApp status
One diya, one wish: may this year go easier on you than the last one did.
Lights on, phone off, worries parked outside for a night 🪔
Ghar saaf, mithai ready, mummy finally sitting down. Diwali officially started.
Darkness never really wins. It just hangs around till someone finds the matchbox.
More diyas, fewer bombs, and someone please save me a gulab jamun.
May your rangoli survive the first round of guests and their chappals.
For Maa, Papa, Dadi and the rest of the gang
Maa, Diwali has always smelled like your kitchen. Whatever city I’m in, that smell is what home means.
Papa, thank you for every Diwali you worked late so ours could be bright. This one’s for you. Shubh Deepavali.
Dadi, nobody tells the village Diwali stories like you. Same one as last year tonight? I don’t mind.
To my whole noisy, lovely family: may we fight over the last laddoo for many more Diwalis to come.
Wherever we are this Diwali, the same diya burns in all our homes. Missing you and sending love from here.
Diwali messages for friends
Happy Diwali to the friend who eats all the kaju katli and then says he’s “not really a sweets person.”
You’ve been the light in a lot of my bad weeks. Hope this Diwali gives a little of that back to you.
Diwali plan: eat, sleep, eat again, then swear we’re joining the gym Monday. Classic. See you at the mithai counter, bhai.
Some friends become family. You’re one of them. Shubh Deepavali to you and everyone at home.
May your Diwali be loud with laughter and quiet on crackers. The dogs on your street will thank you.
Diwali wishes for colleagues, clients and your boss
Wishing you and the family a calm, bright Diwali, and thanks for being so easy to work with this year.
May your inbox stay quiet till Monday and your leave get approved in one go, no follow-up mail needed.
You took a chance on us this year and we haven’t forgotten it. Good health and steady growth to you this Diwali.
Happy Diwali to the team. Log off on time today. The emails will still be there tomorrow.
Lakshmi Puja wishes
May Maa Lakshmi bring wealth to your home, but more than that, peace to your mind. Shubh Lakshmi Puja.
Leave the front door open a crack tonight, and a diya by it. Maa Lakshmi knows which houses want her.
Ganpati clears the road, Lakshmi ji walks in. May both drop by your place this year.
Kuch wishes Hinglish mein (the way we actually type)
Safai mein jo purani chitthiyan mili hain na, unhe phenkna mat yaar. Diwali mubarak!
Pataakhe kam, rishtedaar zyada… mushkil hai, par try karenge. Happy wala Diwali!
Ek diya unke naam bhi, jo is baar dining table pe nahi honge. Shubh Deepawali.
Soan papdi aage forward kar do, pyaar apne paas rakhna. Dher saari badhai!
दिवाली की शुभकामनाएँ हिंदी में (दो लाइन वाली)
For the relatives who still reply only in proper Hindi (you know who), here are some two-liners that actually rhyme. Three of them are on cards too, ready to forward.

Three Hindi cards to forward:

Random Diwali trivia for the family WhatsApp
- Deepavali literally = lamps in a line. Deepa is lamp, avali is row, simple as that. “Diwali” is just the shorter way North India says it.
- It’s picked the darkest night on purpose. Lakshmi Puja is on Kartik Amavasya, new moon, zero moonlight. That’s exactly why the lamps matter so much.
- Ask any Sikh friend about Bandi Chhor Divas. It falls on Diwali too, and remembers Guru Hargobind Ji getting out of Gwalior Fort and reaching Amritsar. Seen Harmandir Sahib lit up that night? Unreal.
- Jain homes have their own reason to light up: it’s the night Bhagwan Mahavira attained nirvana. Many Jain families begin their new year the next day.
- Gujarat’s new year starts right after Diwali. Bestu Varas falls on the same day as Govardhan Puja, Tuesday, November 10 this year, and many traders open fresh account books with Chopda Pujan on Diwali itself.
- In Nepal, one day of the festival is for dogs. During Tihar, Kukur Tihar honours dogs with garlands, tilak and a good meal.
- In South India the big day is often Naraka Chaturdashi. Families wake before sunrise for an oil bath to celebrate Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura.
- Dhanteras is also National Ayurveda Day. India marks it on Dhanvantari Jayanti, honouring the god of medicine. So it’s about health as much as gold.
- The stock market opens for one evening hour. NSE and BSE hold a special “Muhurat Trading” session on Diwali, and lots of families buy a share or two just for luck.
- Bengal worships Maa Kali that night. While most of India is doing Lakshmi Puja, Kolkata’s pandals are all about Kali Puja.
A small request this Diwali
Call one person instead of forwarding them a message. The aunt who lives alone, the friend you haven’t spoken to since college, the old neighbour. A two-minute call means more than a GIF ever will. And if you’re still sending a forward, at least send one of these. Nobody’s seen them yet.
Happy Diwali from neeshu.com/. May your home be bright and your heart even brighter.
