Have you seen a huge Charizard expand to stadium size and take a blow that would kill an ordinary monster? That’s Dynamax. You met it first in Pokémon Sword and Shield back in 2019 — and then it disappeared from the main line — and appeared in Pokémon GO — and in 2026 it’s finally back — and more dynamax than ever.
Let’s get into all the details: What Dynamax actually does, how Gigantamax is different, how it compares to Mega Evolution, and where you can still use it today.

Where Dynamax comes from

We’re in the Galar region. During the Sword and Shield story, the Legendary Pokémon — Eternatus — rammed into Galar and the Darkest Day occurred, which is when Eternatus emitted a strange energy. That energy, which is known as Galar Particles, was absorbed by the land and accumulated in locations called Power Spots.
Trainers harness the energy from it by wearing a Dynamax Band that’s made from a Wishing Star. Go onto a Power Spot, hoist your band into the air, and hey presto, your Pokémon gets a short, sharp growth spurt. It’s the reason why every Gym stadium in Galar was built over a Power Spot. Dynamax battles then became the region’s number one spectator sport.
How Dynamax works in Sword and Shield

Dynamax is not just a change of size. It is a quick and forceful burst of energy with a few constraints.
- It lasts three turns. After that, your Pokémon shrinks back to normal.
- Once per battle. You only have one, so timing is everything.
- More HP. HP increases based on Dynamax Level (0 to 10): +50% at Level 0, doubled at Level 10.
- Max Moves replace normal moves. Max Geyser sets rain, Max Knuckle raises Attack, Max Airstream raises Speed. Status moves become Max Guard.
- Built-in protection. No flinching; immune to Encore, Torment, Disable, weight-based moves and one-hit KO moves.
- One big weakness. Behemoth Blade, Behemoth Bash and Dynamax Cannon deal double damage.
Zacian, Zamazenta and Eternatus can’t Dynamax at all. You’ll find Dynamax at Gym stadiums, the Battle Tower, Max Raid Battles, and Crown Tundra’s Dynamax Adventures.
Dynamax vs Gigantamax: what’s the difference?

Gigantamax is a special form only Pokémon with the Gigantamax Factor can take. Gigantamax Charizard develops wings of flame, Pikachu becomes chubby like its 1996 look, and Snorlax sprouts a forest on its belly. Each gets an exclusive G-Max Move, like G-Max Wildfire.
| Aspect | Dynamax | Gigantamax |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Same Pokémon, just giant | New giant form |
| Signature moves | Standard Max Moves | Exclusive G-Max Move |
| Who can do it | Almost any Pokémon | Species with Gigantamax Factor |
| How you get one | Any Pokémon you catch | Max Raids, events, or Max Soup |
How Dynamax compares to Mega Evolution

FAQs

What does Dynamax mean?
It’s a mix of “dynamic” and “maximum” — a Pokémon pushed to its maximum size and power, but only for a little while.
Is it Dynamax or Gigantamax?
Simply increasing size is Dynamax. The Pokémon that gets bigger, changes its form and has its own unique G-Max Move is Gigantamax.
Does Dynamax cost anything?
Not in Sword and Shield — the Dynamax Band is free as a story item. Other games are a bit different. In Pokémon GO, for instance, Max Battles cost Max Particles you earn by playing, and some events sell optional tickets with extra particles.
How do I beat Gigantamax Charizard?
Because of its Fire and Flying typing, Charizard is weak to Rock-type moves that hit for four times damage. Tyranitar, Rhyperior and Gigalith are strong picks. Bring Pokémon with decent Special Defense to handle G-Max Wildfire, and in Sword and Shield, Dynamax your own Pokémon to match it.
How do I Gigantamax Urshifu?
In the Isle of Armor DLC, finish Urshifu’s training, collect three Max Mushrooms and give them to Mustard’s family at the Master Dojo to make Max Soup. Feed it to Urshifu and it gains the Gigantamax Factor.
How hard is Gigantamax Gengar?
A tough match-up, mainly because G-Max Terror stops your Pokémon from switching. Dark-types like Tyranitar or Grimmsnarl handle it well, and faster Ghost-types can hit it hard too.
Is Dynamax only in Galar?
In the story, yes. Dynamax is powered by Galar Particles and Power Spots, which only exist in Galar. The one exception is Pokémon GO, where Power Spots appear around the world.
The bottom line

Dynamax was Sword and Shield’s big idea: three turns of giant, screen-filling power. It hasn’t come back to the main series, but in Pokémon GO it’s more alive than ever, with Max Mondays every week and new debuts like the Lake Guardians and Gigantamax Duraludon this autumn.
