Fleet Admiral Sakazuki does not lose fights the way most One Piece villains lose fights. He does not get out-muscled in a long exchange and then admit the other guy wanted it more. He ends people. One clean Magu Magu no Mi hit burned a hole through Portgas D. Ace and cooked the organs on the way through. The same fruit boiled the sea around Marineford, melted a Pacifista’s armor, and, over ten days on Punk Hazard, permanently split an island’s climate with Kuzan.

The official material ranks that fruit’s offensive power at the very top of Devil Fruits. Oda did not give Sakazuki a utility Logia. He gave him a weapon.

That is why “who can beat Akainu” is a worse question than it looks. A lot of names on the usual lists can hurt him. Very few can do it without eating a Meigo, the Hell Hound punch, on the way in. Akainu’s real win condition is not a power-level gap. It is that he only needs one exchange to go his way.

If you are still arguing from the anime cut of Marineford, park that for a second. The manga fight with Whitebeard is shorter and uglier. A sick, already-wounded Whitebeard still blasted a hole through Sakazuki’s torso and dropped him into a crater. Sakazuki climbed back out of the bedrock and took half of Whitebeard’s face. Neither man walked out of that looking untouchable. The “Akainu is a raid boss with no damage taken” read is mostly the extended anime version talking.

What actually beats him

Three things, and a fighter needs at least one.

First, a way to hit the man and not the magma. Basic Armament was not enough at Marineford. Marco and Vista, a division commander and a master swordsman, both swung Haki at him and failed to punch through the element. He parted around the strikes. That is the detail most listicles skip, and it changes the whole ranking. You are not looking for “has Haki.” You are looking for Advanced Armament, internal destruction, or Conqueror’s coating heavy enough that the body cannot just open a hole and let the attack pass.

Second, a way to not get tagged. Sakazuki fights forward. Ryusei Kazan drops magma meteors. Dai Funka is a fist the size of a building. Inugami Guren is a molten hound that runs you down. Fighters who like to trade punches are volunteering a limb.

Third, a win condition that is not “burn him worse than he burns you.” Magma ate Ace’s fire on contact. It did not eat Marco’s phoenix flames the same way. Those are different powers. Ace was a Logia made of flame, and Sakazuki said the quiet part out loud: magma is the superior element, and it cancels the flame body’s intangibility. Marco is a Mythical Zoan regenerating through blue fire. If your argument is “my guy also has fire, so it’s even,” Ace already lost that argument on-panel.

One more filter, and this one annoys admiral fans. Sakazuki has never been shown using Conqueror’s Haki. Not once. He has absurd Armament, the stamina to fight for ten days, and a fruit that punishes every mistake. He does not have the on-panel Supreme King coating that Shanks, Kaido, Luffy, Big Mom, and (as of the manga’s chapter 1194) Mihawk have confirmed. Against anyone whose whole style is infused Conqueror’s, that gap matters more than a Cross Guild poster.

The poster, by the way, puts five crowns on him. Same board as Roger and Whitebeard. Cross Guild bounties measure how badly the pirates want you dead, not a clean strength ranking. Useful as fear. Useless as a versus card.

The names that are not a debate

Manga Spoiler Warning: The following sections discuss recent One Piece manga developments, including Mihawk, Imu, the God’s Knights, and abilities not yet covered in the anime.

Imu. Fleet Admiral is a job. Imu sits above the job. Lulusia did not get defeated in a duel. It got removed. Whatever the Empty Throne is actually running, a Logia parting around a sword is not the answer to it. The manga has also put a name on the counter Holy Knights use against Conqueror’s Haki: Omen. Sommers says it outright. If Imu’s side can shrug off the exact tool the rest of this list uses to crack a top tier, Sakazuki is not the measuring stick in that fight. He is staff.

Jaygarcia Saturn, and the rest of the Five Elders by the same logic. Egghead was the rude awakening. Saturn’s Gyuki form took Gear 5 shots and severed limbs and kept moving, because the body was not playing by Zoan rules as we knew them. Akainu’s whole career is lethal, irreversible damage. Meigo works because the hole stays a hole. Regeneration that closes the hole deletes his best move. He can still win a minute. He cannot win the hour. Joy Boy’s Haki knocked the Elders out of those forms once, which tells you the real counter is a specific grade of Conqueror’s, not heat. Sakazuki has not shown that grade.

Figarland Garling. Thin on current-era footage, heavy on résumé. He was the champion of God Valley, he runs the God’s Knights, and he executed Saint Mjosgard in public with nobody in the room willing to call it a crime. His son Shamrock is walking around with a sword that ate a Cerberus Mythical Zoan, which should tell you what the family standard looks like. Garling belongs on this list as a swordsman who has already lived in the same ring as the old monsters. He does not belong on it as a finished versus card. Anyone writing “Garling mid-diffs” is writing fanfiction with a straight face.

The pirates who have the tools on-panel

Monkey D. Luffy. This is the fight the series owes us, and it is also the fight where Luffy’s specific kit stops being a personality trait and starts being a counter. Gear 5 turns the environment into a joke. More important than the joke is Ryuo and Conqueror’s coating. Luffy does not have to grab a magma fist to hurt the man inside it. Internal destruction hits past the element. That is the whole problem Marco and Vista ran into, solved by the version of Luffy who split the sky with Kaido.

The catch is the one fans skip because they like the revenge angle. Gear 5 burns stamina, and Sakazuki’s best historical feat is not a one-shot. It is ten days. If Luffy treats this like Lucci and spends the first half performing, he can still lose an arm. If he fights like he fought Kaido at the end, the magma never gets the exchange it wants.

Marshall D. Teach. On paper this is a hate crime against Logias. The Yami Yami no Mi pulls a Devil Fruit user in and shuts the fruit off on contact. The Gura Gura no Mi is the same fruit that broke Marineford and broke Sakazuki’s ribs when Whitebeard still had it. Stack those and the admiral’s whole style falls over.

The part Blackbeard fans leave out is the cost. Darkness does not grant intangibility. It does the opposite. Teach takes more damage than a normal body, and he has to touch the magma to turn it off. Whitebeard’s fruit also did not stop Sakazuki from getting back up. So yes, Teach has the nastiest matchup on this list. He also has the nastiest way to die attempting it. A win here looks like a quake detonating inside a nullified body. A loss looks like Kurouzu closing on a volcano.

Shanks. He already did the thing. Gryphon met a magma fist at the end of the war and the fist stopped. Sakazuki did not throw a second one. People overread that as fear, and people underread it as nothing. The honest version is in the middle. The war goal was already done, Whitebeard’s crew was still standing, and a Yonko had just walked in and canceled the punch without looking bothered. You do not restart that fight for pride.

Everything since has made the rematch less interesting, not more. Observation Killing, the thing he used to shut off Kid’s future sight, is a horrible tool into a man who dodges by opening his body. Kamusari is a Conqueror’s slash thrown from a range where the magma splash does not matter. Wi-Fi Haki made an admiral freeze from another island. Sakazuki is not Greenbull. The tool kit still favors the red hair.

Dracule Mihawk. Yoru is a Black Blade. Permanent Armament, not a coat you apply before a swing. Marineford gave us the visual everybody quotes, the slash that split the frozen tsunami, and it also gave us the other visual nobody quotes: ordinary blades melting when they touched Sakazuki. Those are not the same category of sword.

Mihawk’s other gift is that he does not need to walk into Dai Funka. Hawk Eyes plus ranged slashes means the fight happens at the distance Akainu least wants. Chapter 1194 finally stopped the decade-long argument and confirmed the Conqueror’s. A Black Blade swinging with Supreme King coating is the cleanest answer to “he will just part around it.”

Kaido. Leave the temperature debate alone. Kaido’s flame clouds and Boro Breath are absurd. They are not a stated counter to magma, and ranking his flame dragon as “hotter, so he wins” is how you get laughed out of a thread. What Kaido actually has is a body that took a raid, a Mythical Zoan that keeps going after it should have stopped, and Conqueror’s coating on a kanabo the size of a ship mast. Sakazuki can burn him. Kaido has been burned, stabbed, and dropped off an island and treated it as a warmup. The longer this fight goes, the worse it gets for the man whose win condition is a single lethal punch.

Charlotte Linlin. Big Mom’s durability is her body, not a barrier she turns on. Prometheus gives her a sun homie and a ridiculous heat tolerance. It does not make her magma-proof, and it does not make her immune to the kind of piercing hit that took half of Whitebeard’s head. She has lost to concentrated attacks before. Law and Kid did not out-endure her. They broke the combination.

What she does have is a fight that refuses to be a duel. Homies, soul tax, a sword the size of a building, Conqueror’s clashes that level the block. Akainu is terrifying in a straight line. Linlin does not fight in a straight line. Call it even and expect the island to lose.

Old legends, with the age tax included

Monkey D. Garp. “I would have killed Sakazuki” is the most quoted line in this argument and the least useful. He said it over Ace’s body, and Sengoku sat on him because a Marine hero attacking a Marine admiral in the middle of the war ends the institution, not because Sengoku had run the numbers. Grief is not a feat.

Galaxy Impact is a feat. No fruit, no weapon, a punch that deletes a town on shockwave alone, thrown by an old man who was already bleeding. Prime Garp fought Roger and lived in the same era as Rocks. Current Garp is still a problem and is also a man Kuzan could drag down once Shiryu had already put a blade in him. Do not let that Hachinosu fight become “Aokiji beat Garp, so Akainu beats Garp.” It was not a duel. Prime Garp wins. Old Garp makes it a miserable coin flip that Sakazuki might not enjoy.

Shiki the Golden Lion. Prime Shiki made Garp and Sengoku destroy half of Marineford trying to hold him, and he did it with a fruit that does not even touch living bodies. The Fuwa Fuwa no Mi lifts everything else. Ships, rubble, the island you were standing on. Sakazuki’s style is a brawler who erupts out of the ground and punches. Take the ground away and throw the battlefield at him and the brawler is solving a different puzzle. This is a prime-only entry. The Shiki of later years is not this fight.

Sengoku. He knows the man. He handed him the job after Punk Hazard, which is its own awkward footnote. The Daibutsu form hits with shockwaves, so he does not have to plant a palm on magma to do damage, and that matters against this fruit more than people admit. The problem is the same problem Rayleigh has. Sengoku is old, Sakazuki spent ten days proving he does not get tired, and nothing in Sengoku’s kit is a hard counter. He can win a careful fight. He does not win a reckless one.

Silvers Rayleigh. The man who taught Luffy to hit a Logia without touching the element. That alone puts him on the list. He stalled Kizaru, and he talked a two-fruit Blackbeard out of a fight at Amazon Lily without throwing the punch. Technique is not his issue. A ten-day monster against a man in his seventies is a stamina problem, and Rayleigh would be the first to say so. His win is an early Kamusari-level shot. His loss is round four.

The two arguments you should not pretend are settled

Monkey D. Dragon. Highest narrative stock on this list, thinnest footage. Loguetown, the Revolutionaries, the weather that keeps arriving when he does. Fans have called it a Wind Logia for twenty years. The manga has not. Write that as a theory and you are fine. Write it as a power and you are doing the thing where every blank gets filled.

The tactical version of the theory is at least clever. A hard enough pressure drop starves a fire, and magma is still a fire in the loose way Oda draws elements. A man who can move the sky might be able to fight Sakazuki without ever standing in Dai Funka. Add the Garp bloodline and the fact that the World Government treats him as a bigger problem than most Yonko, and he belongs here. He does not belong above Shanks until we see the hands.

Sabo. Last on purpose. Sakazuki already explained this matchup while Ace was dying. Magma consumes flame. It cancels the flame Logia’s trick of not being there. Sabo inherited the Mera Mera no Mi, which means he inherited the loss condition unless he refuses to fight the way Ace fought.

His way out is the thing he had before the fruit. Ryusoken hits structure. Dragon Claw was cracking bodies at the colosseum before he ever swallowed Ace’s power. If the claws carry real Armament, or Conqueror’s he has not shown, he is hitting Sakazuki and not the fire. If he awakens the fruit into something meaner than Ace’s flame, maybe the elemental gap narrows. Both of those are hopes. The canon interaction is not a hope. It is a grave. Sabo can win this in a story sense, because Oda loves a reversed inheritance. He cannot win it by swinging fire harder.

Who almost made it, and why they didn’t

Kuzan fought him for ten days and lived, then left. That is the best evidence in the series that Sakazuki is not a different species from the other admirals. It is also evidence that Kuzan did not win. Putting him on a “who can defeat Akainu” list is how you end up arguing a draw is a victory.

Whitebeard, on the day, did more damage to Sakazuki than anyone else has. He was also dying, and he still lost the exchange that mattered. Prime Whitebeard walks through this list and out the other side. Prime Whitebeard is not available.

Figarland Shamrock is the name I would swap in the moment we get a real fight. A Supreme Commander with a Mythical Zoan sword is not a side character. Right now he is a silhouette with good tailoring.

So who actually does it?

If the question is “who beats him cleanly,” the short list is Imu, Saturn’s regen problem, Shanks, Mihawk, Luffy on a serious day, and Blackbeard if the grab lands first. Kaido and prime Shiki are on that list too, with more property damage. Garp in his prime is not a discussion.

If the question is “who has a chance and might still die doing it,” add Linlin, old Garp, Dragon, Rayleigh, Sengoku. Sabo is the story fight, not the scaling fight. Those are different lists, and mixing them is how every one of these articles starts sounding the same.

Sakazuki’s scar is still on the series. Ace’s absence is the point of half of Luffy’s run. Whenever that rematch happens, the manga has already told us the rule. Do not grab the magma. Hit the man, from a distance if you can, and do not give him the one exchange he needs.
